The ballast works together with a trim tab to change it up between rampy wakeboarding wakes and quiet slalom wakes. To empty the tanks you just open the valves and give the boat some gas the centrifugal force then empties the tanks while you’re driving - once they’re empty you push a button to close the valves again. Then you close the valves to lock the ballast in the tanks. A button opens valves that let water rush in, so it only takes a minute or less to fill (the idea comes from watching how fast a boat sinks when you forget to put the drain plug in). It’s basically two 3-inch holes in the stern below the waterline with tubes that lead to tanks in the boat. The simplicity of the ballast system is its best factor. As fuel is consumed by the engine, you can use Calabria’s patented PureVert wake system to add up to 700 pounds of ballast to replace the weight and maintain the proper balance. The result is a V-drive that planes and handles like a mid-engine boat, which means minimal bowrise and great watersports performance. The fuel tank is also placed up toward the bow, which further counters the weight of the engine in the stern (65 gallons of gasoline weighs about 407 pounds). To counter the weight of having an engine in the rear, Calabria placed the helm of the Pro V2 farther forward. The main point Calabria likes to make about its V-drives is that they offer the performance and handling of a mid-engine boat along with the space and wakeboarding benefits of a V-drive. ![]() This attention to quality shines through in the new Cal Air Pro V2, which inherits its genes from its slightly larger sibling, the Cal Air Pro V.
